The Loop-De-Loop, Zigzagging Journey to Adulthood
by Mari Andrew

Mari Andrew started doodling when she worked at a bakery–she took some license with the display case labels. When customers noticed and began telling her the drawings brightened their days, Mari realized she could use that hobby to connect with people. She hit a professional rough patch in her late 20s and began to chronicle her work on Instagram. Nearly overnight, she became a sensation. Now when Mari Andrew posts something new, the Internet rejoices.

This book is organized by universal themes of becoming an adult–for example, loss, adventure, ambition. Within each chapter, Mari shares her personal experiences in never-before-seen essays, accompanied by spreads of her signature illustrations, 90 percent of which are brand new. Readers are bound to see some of themselves in this book, whether seeking advice on how to handle growing up, or just looking for a friend who can commiserate.

by Neil Gaiman

A creative call to arms from the mind of Neil Gaiman, combining his extraordinary words with deft and striking illustrations by Chris Riddell. Art Matters will inspire its readers to seize the day in the name of art. Be bold. Be rebellious. Choose art. It matters.

Neil Gaiman once said that ‘the world always seems brighter when you’ve just made something that wasn’t there before’. This little book is the embodiment of that vision. Drawn together from speeches, poems and creative manifestos, Art Matters explores how reading, imagining and creating can change the world, and will be inspirational to young and old.

For dog owners and dog lovers everywhere, a humorous, fully illustrated book that shows us that even when we feel at our worst, our dogs still think we’re the best – so start acting like it!

With more than forty full-colour illustrations from The New Yorker’s Liza Donnelly, Be the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are reminds us just why our canine companions want us as their best friend. Hilarious, heartfelt, and howlingly clever, this book is sure to find a welcome home on any bookshelf, right next to the chew toys.

by Nick Bertozzi and Pierce Hargan

Celebrated during his lifetime as much for his personality as for his paintings, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is the man who invented Pop Art, the notion of 15 minutes of fame, and the idea that an artist could be as illustrious as the work he creates. With a unique, focused look at Warhol’s life, this graphic novel biography offers insight into the turning point of Warhol’s career and the time leading up to the creation of the Thirteen Most Wanted Men mural for the 1964 World’s Fair, when Warhol clashed with urban planner Robert Moses and architect Philip Johnson.

In Becoming Andy Warhol, New York Times bestselling writer Nick Bertozzi and artist Pierce Hargan showcase the moment when, by stubborn force of personality and sheer burgeoning talent, Warhol went up against the creative establishment and emerged to become one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.

by Rod Judkins

In Change Your Mind, Rod Judkins reveals that creative people are no more creative than the rest of us. Rather, their gift is that they believe they are creative, and because of this, they are. Many of these people lack traditional artistic abilities (Francis Bacon couldn’t draw, so he didn’t; Andy Warhol couldn’t paint, so he didn’t) but that doesn’t stop them. This self-belief accounts for 90 per cent of their success. Creativity is a skill that everyone can learn and benefit from, whether you re trying to start your own business, write music, come up with new ideas at work or just change your way of looking at the world.

Follow theses 57 insider tips, which include nuggets of wisdom such as the importance of focus, why you should never wait for inspiration and how you should always turn a failure into success. With real-life insights into the minds of writers, artists and musicians, from Picasso to Paul McCartney, Change Your Mind will unlock the creative genius you always knew you were.

by Mason Currey

In Daily Rituals: Women at Work, we see how brilliant female creators got to work, often in the face of sexism and opposition from those around them.

Barbara Hepworth sculpted outdoors and Janet Frame wrote wearing earmuffs to block out the noise. Kate Chopin wrote with her six children ‘swarming around her’ whereas the artist Rosa Bonheur filled her bedroom with the sixty birds that inspired her work. Louise May Alcott wrote so vigorously – skipping sleep and meals – that she had to learn to write with her left hand to give her cramped right hand a break.

From Virginia Woolf and Charlotte Brontë to Nina Simone and Jane Campion, this is a book full of the day-to-day lives of some of the world’s most brilliant creative minds who – no matter what stood in their way – found the time and got to work.

by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman

Where can you find joy? What’s the true measure of success? How should we manage anger? Find meaning? Conquer grief? The answers to these questions and more lie at the heart of Stoic philosophy.

The Daily Stoic is a compelling, accessible guide to living a good life, offering daily doses of this classic wisdom. Long the secret weapon of history’s great figures, from emperors to artists and activists to fighter pilots, the principles of Stoicism have shone brightly through the centuries as a philosophy for doers. Tested in the laboratory of human experience over the last two thousand years, this timeless knowledge is essential to navigating the complexities of modern life. The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, and the slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as diamonds like Zeno, Cleanthes and Musonius Rufus. by Judith Anodea

In Eastern Body, Western Mind, chakra authority Anodea Judith brought a fresh approach to the yoga-based Eastern chakra system, adapting it to the Western framework of Jungian psychology, somatic therapy, childhood developmental theory, and metaphysics and applying the chakra system to important modern social realities and issues such as addiction, codependence, family dynamics, sexuality, and personal empowerment.

Arranged schematically, the book uses the inherent structure of the chakra system as a map upon which to chart our Western understanding of individual development. Each chapter focuses on a single chakra, starting with a description of its characteristics and then exploring its particular childhood developmental patterns, traumas and abuses, and how to heal and maintain balance.

by Lane Moore

Lane Moore is a fool for love. From her addiction to romantic comedies to her tendency to form instant soulmate connections with strangers, Lane has a way of romanticizing everything and everyone. It’s no wonder the New York Times, in a review of her comedy show, ‘Tinder Live! with Lane Moore,’ called her ‘a flirt par excellence.’ But her romantic nature belies a decidedly unromantic childhood, one that sent her down a long and difficult road.

Lane considers herself an orphan, though she has two living parents. After being abused as a child, bullied by her peers, and targeted by older men at a young age, she became homeless after high school and lived out of her car in Los Angeles. Lonely and afraid, it took years for her to ultimately become empowered enough to start her life over again–but start over, she did.

Where others see a void, Lane sees an opportunity. Her estrangement from her family was a catalyst for her to build a new one with a community of friends, comedians, and oddball roommates in Los Angeles and then New York City. Her experience with sexual assault informed her work as the sex and relationships editor for Cosmopolitan, which turned her into a champion for young women. With an intoxicating blend of dark wit and relentless positivity, Lane sheds light on an often-stigmatized condition and reveals how she harnessed and drew strength from her loneliness to become the creative powerhouse she is today.

by Scott McCloud

Scott McCloud tore down the wall between high and low culture in 1993 with Understanding Comics, a massive comic book about comics, linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design. In Reinventing Comics, McCloud took this to the next level, charting twelve different revolutions in how comics are generated, read, and perceived today.

Now, in Making Comics, McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character’s facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand-in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way. Both comic book devotees and the uninitiated will marvel at this journey into a once-underappreciated art form.

by Alex Ross

Here is the beloved Marvel Universe of comics characters, brought to thrilling life as only Alex Ross can. They’re all here: Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, and many more – all seeming to leap, blast, and launch off the page.

For almost thirty years, Ross has been working nonstop to create some of the most astonishing images in comics, and while Marvelocity collects the very best of that oeuvre, it’s much more than that. Inside are hundreds of drawings, paintings, and photographs that have never been published before, including an original ten-page story featuring Spider-Man versus the Sinister Six, redesign proposals for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and a re-creation of an epic battle between the Sub-Mariner and Iron Man.

But this isn’t just the story of the Marvel characters – it’s also the incredibly inspiring true tale of a little boy who only ever wanted to draw and paint super heroes. And with enough determination, talent, and very hard work, that’s precisely what he did. Marvelocity is the result, and is sure to entrance and delight fans of all ages.

That Sense Of Wonder
by Francesco Dimitri

All of us experience a sense of wonder at some point in our lives. Perhaps you felt it when you experienced your first kiss; when you grasped the perfectly balanced beauty of an equation; or when you first saw the rose windows of Chartres Cathedral? Whatever the circumstances that triggered the feeling, you were left speechless by this extraordinary world of ours. We may speak different languages, cling to different ideas about politics, religion and love – but a longing for wonder connects us all through space and time.

Wonder is the impulse behind scientific and philosophical inquiry, artistic creativity and spiritual yearning. It is the most fruitful human sense: firing our curiosity; inspiring us to hope and dream. But our sense of wonder – that feeling we had as children seeing the Milky Way for the first time – gets used up. Faced with the practical demands of adulthood, we trade a sense of wonder for a sense of reality, which all too often brings anxiety and unhappiness in its wake. By exploring the nature of wonder in many areas of human experience, from the natural world to the spirit world, from science to storytelling, Francesco Dimitri reveals how we can reclaim our sense of wonder – not to become children again, but to become happier and more fulfilled adults, better equipped to face the challenges of modern life.

Here we have gathered a selection of our favourite Asian authors as a jumping off point for some new experiences inspired by some of our closest neighbours.

From artificial intelligence to microbiomes, economics to architecture, revolutionary mathematicians to renegades of the Silicon Valley, here is a selection of some of our favourite ground-breaking titles to inspire, to challenge and to delight.

The Fourth Age : Smart Robots, Conscious Computers, and the Future of Humanity
by Byron Reese

We are now on the doorstep of a fourth change brought about by two technologies: AI and robotics. The Fourth Age provides extraordinary background information on how we got to this point, and how – rather than what – we should think about the topics we’ll soon all be facing: machine consciousness, automation, employment, creative computers, radical life extension, artificial life, AI ethics, the future of warfare, superintelligence, and the implications of extreme prosperity.

By asking questions like “Are you a machine?” and “Could a computer feel anything?”, Reese leads you through a discussion along the cutting edge in robotics and AI, and, provides a framework by which we can all understand, discuss, and act on the issues of the Fourth Age, and how they’ll transform humanity.

by Nick Polson and James Scott

Dozens of times per day, we all interact with intelligent machines that are constantly learning from the wealth of data now available to them. These machines, from smart phones to talking robots to self-driving cars, are remaking the world in the twenty first century in the same way that the Industrial Revolution remade the world in the nineteenth.

AIQ is based on a simple premise: if you want to understand the modern world, then you have to know a little bit of the mathematical language spoken by intelligent machines. AIQ will teach you that language but in an unconventional way, anchored in stories rather than equations.

by Susan L. Prescott and Alan C. Logan

For too long our bodies have been viewed as capsules, sealed off and protected from ‘bugs’ by our immune systems and an arsenal of antibiotics, pesticides, processed foods, and antibacterial soaps. The more insulated from nature, the better.

The Secret Life of Your Microbiome shatters this deeply held myth, presenting a revolutionary new paradigm, backed by vast science; we’re deeply connected to the biodiversity of nature through our microbiomes, the rich microbial ecosystem of our guts and skin, and this connection is essential to health and happiness.

by Raphael Kellman

Every part of your body affects every other part of your body, and if any one area is not functioning properly, other systems will feel it, too. There is a fundamental connection between the brain, the gut, the microbiome, and the thyroid – which Dr Raphael Kellman calls ‘the whole brain’. In this lively, accessible book, he reveals how this system works in tandem to keep us healthy, and how, by making small changes, we can use it to heal mood and mental disorders without drugs.

With a practical guide featuring meal plans, an exercise program, and a program of daily meditations and affirmations, The Whole Brain Diet will benefit people diagnosed with depression or anxiety, and those who just want to feel better in themselves.

by Thomas Piketty

What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital?

Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories. In Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Piketty analyzes a unique collection of data from twenty countries, ranging as far back as the eighteenth century, to uncover key economic and social patterns. His findings will transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of thought about wealth and inequality.

by Muhammad Yunus

Muhammad Yunus is the Bangladeshi economist who invented microcredit, founded Grameen Bank, and earned a Nobel Peace Prize for his work towards alleviating poverty. Here, he argues that the capitalist system is broken. In its current form, it inevitably leads to rampant inequality, massive unemployment, and devastating environmental destruction. To save humankind and the planet, we need a new economic system based on a more realistic vision of human nature – one that recognises altruism and generosity as driving forces that are just as fundamental and powerful as self-interest.

A World of Three Zeroes describes the new civilisation that is emerging from the economic experiments Yunus’ work has helped to inspire, and offers a challenge to young people, business and political leaders, and ordinary citizens to embrace his mission and improve the world for everyone.

by Margot Lee Shetterly

Set amid the civil rights movement, the never-before-told true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program. Before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of professionals worked as ‘Human Computers’, calculating the flight paths that would enable these historic achievements. Among these were a coterie of bright, talented African-American women. Segregated from their white counterparts, these ‘coloured computers’ used pencil and paper to write the equations that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space. Moving from World War II through NASA’s golden age, touching on the civil rights era, the Space Race, the Cold War, and the women’s rights movement, Hidden Figures interweaves a rich history of mankind’s greatest adventure with the intimate stories of five courageous women whose work forever changed the world.

by Lloyd Kahn and Bob Easton

Shelter is many things – a visually dynamic, oversized compendium of organic architecture past and present; a how-to book that includes over 1,250 illustrations; and a Whole Earth Catalog-type sourcebook for living in harmony with the earth by using every conceivable material. First published in 1973, Shelter remains a source of inspiration and invention. Including the nuts-and-bolts aspects of building, the book covers such topics as dwellings from Iron Age huts to Bedouin tents to Togo’s tin-and-thatch houses; nomadic shelters from tipis to “housecars”; and domes, dome cities, sod iglus, and even treehouses.

The authors recount personal stories about alternative dwellings that illustrate sensible solutions to problems associated with using materials found in the environment – with fascinating, often surprising results.

by Geoffrey London, Philip Goad, Conrad Hamann

Architect-designed houses of the period 1950-65 proposed an innovative response to the social, economic, and climatic conditions of post-war Australia. At the same time they embraced the aesthetic, technological, and egalitarian aspirations of modern architecture.

An Unfinished Experiment in Living traces the emergence of this architectural phenomenon in Australia, documenting the full range of its expression: from the postwar optimism of the early 1950s through to the affluence of the 1960s.

by Brad Stone

Ten years ago, the idea of getting into a stranger’s car, or walking into a stranger’s home, would have seemed bizarre and dangerous, but today it’s as common as ordering a book online. Uber and Airbnb are household names: redefining neighbourhoods, challenging the way governments regulate business and changing the way we travel.

In the spirit of iconic Silicon Valley renegades like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, a new generation of entrepreneurs is sparking yet another cultural upheaval through technology. They are among the Upstarts, idiosyncratic founders with limitless drive and an abundance of self-confidence. Young, hungry and brilliant, they are rewriting the traditional rules of business, changing our day-to-day lives and often sidestepping serious ethical and legal obstacles in the process.

The Upstarts is the definitive account of a dawning age of tenacity, creativity, conflict and wealth. In Brad Stone’s highly anticipated and riveting account of the most radical companies of the new Silicon Valley, we find out how it all started, and how the world is wildly different than it was ten years ago.

20% OFF* all Young Adult titles in July!

So… YA Matters on many levels. Really. There are levels. What we mean to say is that YA talks about a whole lot of matters, but that it also matters. YA has purpose and intention and it matters to a whole lot of people. And it matters because it can do so much, say so much, about so many things. It has the power to talk to, and about, so many people and…matters. And they may be matters like ‘Issues’ with a capital I, like caring for a mother with degenerative MS, or issues like coming to terms with having made a fool of yourself. It could be about trying to survive being black in a town when you could you be shot by a policeman on your way home from a party. It could be about being held like a prisoner because you are a refugee. It could be about coming out to your friends, or telling someone that you love them. Maybe it’s about learning to ‘own’ the size of your butt, or feeling empowered when you see someone regain their magic and take back what’s theirs. Maybe it’s about escaping a bit or feeling excited, overwhelmed, happy, confused or like your heart has just been ripped out.

YA Matters. Again, it really does. It’s about seeing yourself and your story out in the world, and about meeting others and their stories, too.

So, read something that matters. Read some Young Adult stories.

Tomi Adeyemi
RRP $16.99

Not just an amazing jacket! Banned magic could save her people, but Zelie is only just learning how to use it. Now so much could depend on her abilities. With unlikely support and a King determined to stop her at any cost this will be a race to the end – and what an explosive finish to the first book in this trilogy! Extraordinary world-building and compelling storytelling, this is epic fantasy at its very best.

Carolyn Mackler
RRP $14.99

We first read this 15 years ago, and adored the story of imperfect Virginia, with her perfect family, as she comes to recognize that things are not always as they seem. It’s a quirky coming-of-age story that is ultimately wonderfully empowering. Updated for a 2018 audience, with a sequel to follow, The Universe is Expanding and So Am I.

Jesse Andrews
RRP $19.99

Though it has one of the most outlandish premises in all of young adult fiction, Jesse Andrews’ magical realist take on income inequality still manages to punch the heart with incredible force. Even if he’s punching on a tilt. Subversive, radical, melancholy and viciously funny, Munmun is urgent fiction.

Brian Conaghan
RRP $16.99

This stunning, incredibly emotional read, follows Bobby Seed, who has become the primary carer for his mother, whose body is degenerating due to MS, and his younger brother who doesn’t really understand what’s going on. As if life isn’t difficult enough when you’re sixteen and questioning your sexuality, but Bobby will be faced with probably the most difficult thing he’ll ever be asked to do. Beautiful moments of humour in this tender, gut-wrenching story. Have the tissues ready.
