by David Kushner, Koren Shadmi
RRP $22.99

Rise of the Dungeon Master tells, in graphic form, the story of Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, one of the most influential games ever made.

Like the game itself, the narrative casts the reader into the adventure from a first person point of view, taking on the roles of the different characters in the story. Gygax was the son of immigrants who grew up in Lake Geneva, WI, in the 1950s. An imaginative misfit, he escaped into a virtual world based on science fiction novels, military history and strategic games like chess. In the mid-1970s, he co-created the wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons game, determining the rules and inventing the signature 20-sided dice. Starting out in the basement of his home, he was soon struggling to keep up with the demand. Gygax was a purist, in the sense that he was adamant that players use their imaginations and that the rules of the game remain flexible. A creative mind with no real knowledge of business, he made some strategic errors and had a falling out with the game’s co-creator, his close friend and partner, David Arneson. By the late 1970s the game had become so popular among kids that parents started to worry — so much so that a mom’s group was formed to alert parents to the dangers of role play and fantasy. The backlash only fueled the fires of the young fans who continued to play the game, escaping into imaginary worlds. Before long, D&D conventions were set up around the country and the game inspired everything from movies to the first video games. With D&D, Gygax created the kind of role playing fantasy that would fuel the multibillion dollar video game industry, and become a foundation of contemporary geek culture.

The groundbreaking, controversial masterpiece of erotic comics, decades in the making, now in a sumptuous hardcover collecting all three volumes, with 32 pages of new artwork and commentary. For more than a century, Alice, Wendy and Dorothy have been our guides through the Wonderland, Neverland and Land of Oz of our childhoods. Now like us, these three lost girls have grown up and are ready to guide us again, this time through the realms of our sexual awakening and fulfillment. Through their familiar fairytales they share with us their most intimate revelations of desire in its many forms, revelations that shine out radiantly through the dark clouds of war gathering around a luxury Austrian hotel. Drawing on the rich heritage of erotica, Lost Girls is the rediscovery of the power of ecstatic writing and art in a sublime union that only the medium of comics can achieve. Exquisite, thoughtful, and human, Lost Girls is a work of breathtaking scope that challenges the very notion of art fettered by convention. This is erotic fiction at its finest.

20% off* a selection of our favourite Young Adult Graphic Novels in May!

“You could rattle the stars. You could do anything, if you only dared.”

—Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass

You hear about young adult (YA) fiction more and more these days. But what is it? Is YA defined by content, or its readership? Does it have to involve adolescence at every level? All we know for now is that it’s immensely successful, one of the very most popular genres in publishing and is, by far, the largest and fastest growing category in graphic novels! These stories have spawned some of the most successful, and beloved, movies in recent times like The Fault in Our Stars, The Hunger Games, Ghost World and Blue Is the Warmest Colour. From that list alone lies a clue to YA’s enduring popularity. At its best, it’s filled with a diversity of stories so rare in most of traditional entertainment. Thankfully, like all new frontiers, the rules are yet to be written, so the possibilities can be ever in our favour! YA tackles real issues in a risk-taking, potent, fantastical yet authentic way to write about rites of passage, about finding the courage to live in your own skin and about coming of age – no matter what age you are.

It’s by brave authors for readers willing to challenge themselves.

Are you ready to dare?

Sebastian has a secret. He’s the fabulous Lady Crystallia, the hottest fashion icon in Paris! But his secret weapon, dressmaker Frances dreams of a greatness denied to her by her wish to protect her friend. Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family that will steal your heart.

Rico hopes to solve the great mystery of the Abyss – the only unexplored place left on Earth filled with newly-discovered creatures and ancient relics. This is YA at its very best: utterly imaginative, beautifully rendered, sweet but emotionally gut-wrenching, high adventures with some painfully low moments and an orphan-hero to cheer on!

Ms. Liu is a highly celebrated comic book writer. Her extensive work with Marvel includes the bestselling Dark Wolverine series, NYX: No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. Her newest work is MONSTRESS, an original, creator-owned comic book series with Japanese artist (and X-23 collaborator) Sana Takeda. Published by Image in Fall 2015, MONSTRESS is set in an alternate, matriarchal 1920’s Asia and follows a girl’s struggle to survive the trauma of war. With a cast of girls and monsters and set against a richly imagined aesthetic of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS #1 debuted to critical praise.

On September 23rd we celebrated Batman Day and as part of the celebrations we ran a competition for customers to WIN* either a Money-Can’t-Buy LEGO Batman Movie LEGO® set signed by Zach Galifianakis OR a replica Harley Quinn baseball bat from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

There were many worthy contenders, but these two were the luck ducks who won based on their awesome entries!

The competition question:

Who do you think, besides Batman, could be the (anti?)hero that Gotham truly deserves and why?

ZUBAIDA – the winner of the Harley Quinn baseball bat replica!

Her answer: “The Joker because Gotham needs Batman but doesn’t deserve him. The dystopia that is Gotham needs madness and a no-limit anti-hero. Batman, despite being off the rails still has limits. The Joker doesn’t.”

DAN won the LEGO Batman Movie LEGO® set signed by Zach Galifianakis!

His answer: “Azrael, because he is willing to go over the edge to save Gotham, and cross that line that Batman dare not!”

Big congrats to Zubaida and Dan! We hope you guys enjoy your prizes.

And thank you to everyone who entered the competition! See you at the next Batman Day…

Another origin, you ask? But this reveals what it’s like to be an only child of an entire race of Amazons and the tragic true reason she’s obligated herself to be Wonder Woman. So much amazing watercolours, so many feels!

Kiyohiko Azuma

It’s a light-hearted manga about a random little girl. I like to read about what she does and her reactions to normal life tasks. I like how adults around her change. Her positive attitude towards her life makes it worth reading.
