In Chasing the Sky: 20 Stories of Women in Architecture the concentrated voice of some of Australia’s most dynamic practitioners, and their substantial projects, compel us to strive for just such possibility; for equitable and vital architectural careers in our immediate reach. Distilled in this volume is a palpable sense of women at work in architecture, of the joys and challenges of a creative profession and the culture of making.

Some of the architects include Clare Cousins, Penelope Fuller, Sue Carr, Mel Bright, Kerstin Thompson, Camilla Block, Rachel Neeson and many other outstanding designers.

Join us for an in-conversation with three of the book’s contributors – Maryam Gusheh, Penelope Fuller and Rachel Neeson. They will discuss the book and their extensive careers in architecture, offering us a unique, personal insight into the lives of women who are currently at the forefront of the Australian architecture industry.

About the panellists

Dr Maryam Gusheh is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of New South Wales and was appointed as the Director of the Architecture Discipline in 2017. She  has an extensive teaching record in architectural design and history and theory and is currently the coordinator of the Housing Stream in the Master of Architecture degree. Maryam entered the university from a background in practice and continues her engagement with the profession as a critic and collaborator.

Penelope Fuller is a founding partner of SilvesterFuller Studio, an architecture and interior design practice based in Sydney, Australia. Following several years working internationally Penny established her practice with Jad Silvester in 2008. In recognition of Silvester Fuller’s first built projects, Penny was the recipient of the Institute of Architects Emerging Architect Prize. Their projects are diverse and range in scale from product design through to multi-use high-rise developments and cover numerous programme typologies.

Rachel Neeson studied architecture at the University of Sydney and graduated with the University Medal in 1993.  Since then she has continued to demonstrate an innovative excellence and has been recognised locally and internationally  through publications, exhibitions and awards including the 2017 Interior Architecture John Verge Award and the Heritage Greeway Award for the Juanita Nielsen Community Centre.  Rachel is a Director of Neeson Murcutt Architects which she founded with her late partner, Nicholas Murcutt, in 2004.  NeesonMurcutt projects range from bespoke houses to multi-unit housing, education projects, public and community commissions and adaptive reuse environments.
