Sirius book launch

Sirius book launch

Join us to celebrate the publication of Sirius, to be launched by the Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney, Clover Moore.

‘Located on one of the finest sites on Sydney Harbour, sharing the magnificent panorama of the harbour in all its moods and the exciting city skyline and nestling against the Harbour Bridge approaches, a new neighbour has arrived just across the water from the famed Opera House.’

These are the optimistic words used by the New South Wales Housing Commission to announce the completion of 79 public housing apartments in The Rocks in 1980. The complex of units was named ‘Sirius’ and would be home to 250 people displaced by The Rocks redevelopment.

This book documents and celebrates Sirius and its residents, from the 1970s Battle for The Rocks and lifting a Green Ban to build Sirius, to the 2017 Land and Environment Court judgment overturning the government’s refusal to list Sirius as a heritage building. An extraordinary story of survival against the odds.

Authors John Dunn, Ben Peake and Amiera Piscopo speak to City of Sydney Councillor Jess Scully about the book, the building and the ongoing campaign to Save Our Sirius.
